Module 3: Soil Organic Carbon

Our tour of negative emissions technologies begins with a completely biological solution: by adopting certain farming practices (known as regenerative agriculture), farmers can improve soil quality, increasing the amount of carbon sequestered in the soil and improving crop growth and farm health. We’ll look at what those practices are, why implementing them may be challenging, and how much carbon we can ultimately remove this way.

10. Soil organic carbon: quantifying and incentivizing its accrual

Christophe Jospe

In order for soil carbon projects to participate in carbon markets, we need a way to determine how much carbon is actually being sequestered in the soil over time. There are a few different ways of approaching this, each with different accuracy and scalability. Christophe gives a good summary here.
